My Impact Is Through Others

People sometimes ask me why I do teach, volunteer, try to support others? Why Communities of Africa? Why health innovation? Why education, mentorship, entrepreneurship, and community development?

The answer has evolved over the years, but it always comes back to the same belief.

I believe people are capable of far more than they often realize.

Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to work with students, entrepreneurs, professionals, researchers, community leaders, and innovators from many different backgrounds. Again and again, I have seen what can happen when people are given the opportunity to learn, contribute, and participate in something meaningful.

I’ve seen confidence grow. I’ve seen ideas become products. I’ve seen students become leaders. I’ve seen individuals discover strengths they didn’t know they had. And I’ve seen how one opportunity can change the direction of a person’s life.

Those experiences have shaped the way I think about impact.

When I was younger, I think I viewed impact differently. Like many people, I imagined that making a difference meant solving big problems directly. Over time, I came to realize that meaningful change is rarely the result of one person acting alone.

Real change happens through people.

It happens when individuals develop the confidence, capabilities, relationships, and opportunities to contribute to something larger than themselves.

That’s why I have become increasingly interested in creating pathways rather than simply delivering programs.

A workshop can be valuable.

A course can be valuable.

A certificate can be valuable.

But what happens afterward is often what matters most.

Do people have opportunities to apply what they have learned?

Do they have opportunities to participate?

Do they have opportunities to build relationships, gain experience, and create value?

Those are the questions that continue to guide my work.

I don’t believe the world changes because more people attend workshops. I believe the world changes when people are empowered to take what they know and use it to improve their lives, strengthen their communities, and create opportunities for others.

That is why Communities of Africa focuses so heavily on participation, collaboration, and pathways to opportunity.

Our goal is not simply to transfer knowledge.

Our goal is to help people discover what they are capable of and create opportunities for them to put those capabilities into practice.

For some people, that may lead to employment. For others, entrepreneurship. For others, community leadership, innovation, product development, or opportunities we cannot yet predict. Every person’s journey is different.

What matters is that they have the opportunity to begin.

One of the most rewarding parts of this work is seeing the ripple effects. A student gains confidence and starts a project. An entrepreneur develops a product that improves lives. A community leader creates opportunities for others. A partnership leads to new possibilities that none of us could have created alone. That is how impact grows. Not through any one individual, but through networks of people contributing their talents, experiences, and perspectives toward something meaningful.

I have come to realize that my greatest impact will never be the projects I personally complete. My greatest impact will be the people I have the privilege to work with, support, teach, mentor, and learn from. Their successes create opportunities for others. Their ideas influence communities. Their contributions extend far beyond anything I could accomplish alone.

In that sense, my impact is amplified through them. That is why I continue to teach and volunteer and create programs with others. Not because I believe I can change the world by myself.

Because I believe that when people are given the opportunity to participate, contribute, and grow, they become capable of creating change in ways that are far greater than any one person could achieve alone.
